Abjurer

Wizards who choose to become abjurers specialize in spells from the school of abjuration. Abjurers are best known as the foremost experts with defensive spells, but they are also talented at blocking the spells of other spellcasters. Abjurers are often employed as bodyguards or support for military organizations.

Level 1

Abjurer: Abjuration Specialization

All abjuration spells on all class lists are treated as being on the wizard spell list for you, and you can choose them when picking wizard spells. You can use abjuration spell scrolls as if they are wizard spell scrolls.

This only applies to spells on one of the class spell lists. Eg. no wizard can choose Divine Smite, because it is a class feature and not on any spell list.

Abjurer: Bonus Spells

You learn the Mage Armor and Shield spells as bonus spells. You gain improved versions of these spells at level 3.

Level 3

Abjurer: Improved Spells

You gain two new spells, which replace Mage Armor and Shield.

Abjurer: Greater Mage Armor

You touch a creature who isn’t wearing armor, and a protective magical force surrounds them, appearing as a glowing, translucent suit of padded or leather armor.

Action – 1 Creature (Touch) – 1st Level (Abjuration) – VSM – 8 Hours

The spell has no effect if the target is wearing armor or later puts on armor- the magical armor flickers and disappears.

Buff

  • The target’s AC becomes 14 + its Dexterity modifier if it wasn’t already higher.

Abjurer: Reactive Barrier

A shimmering shield forms around you or one of your allies, allowing you to block incoming attacks.

Reaction – 1 Creature (60 ft.) – 1st Level (Abjuration) – VS – 1 Round

You cast this spell to block an incoming attack.

If your target is holding a  shield, they cannot gain the benefits of their shield and this spell at  the same time.

Buff:

  • You have a +3* bonus to AC, including  against the triggering attack, and you take no damage from magic  missile.

*Upcasting: The bonus to AC increases by 1 for each spell level above 1st, to a maximum of +5 to AC.

Level 6

Abjurer: Counterspell

You attempt to cancel the effects of a spell using your own magic.

Reaction – 60 ft. – 1st Level (Abjuration) – VS

Trigger: A spell is being cast, and you can see at least one target or part of the area of effect.

The spell slot level used for Counterspell determines what it can counter.

  • If the target spell is lower level than your Counterspell, including cantrips, the target spell fails and has no effect.
  • If the target spell is the same level as your counterspell, roll 1d20 + your intelligence modifier. If you roll at least 10 + the spell’s level, the target spell fails and has no effect.
  • If the target spell is higher level than your Counterspell, you cannot use Counterspell.

Upcasting: See above for details.

Level 10

Abjurer: Abjurer’s Ward

During a Short Rest – Self – Permanent – Magical

You can create a ward on yourself that lasts until you use this feature again. This ward gives you resistance to a damage type of your choice.

Level 14

Abjurer: Control Magic

No Action Cost – 1/Short Rest – Magical

When you successfully use counterspell to block a spell, you can instead gain control of it.

  • You cast the spell as if it originated from you.
  • If the spell requires concentration, you must then concentrate on it.
